Creating A Flawless Base With Drugstore Makeup

The most important part of having a ‘good makeup day’ is getting an absolutely flawless base first!
If the base isn’t right, the whole look will be more difficult to perfect and you will find you won’t achieve the
beautiful, effortless look you’d hoped for. I have been around the block with different brands of foundations, liquids,
creams, powders, you name it! After a LOT of experimenting, I have finally found not one but TWO amazing routines using drugstore makeup to create a flawless base. Of course, I had to share them with all of my other makeup loving babes! Not only are they my holy grail makeup bases but all of the products included are extremely affordable!

If you are a regular reader of my posts, most of these products won’t come as a surprise to you. But sit tight as there are a few newbies making their debut today! I’ll also be giving you the goss on how I apply the products to get that dreamy ‘I woke up like this’ looking skin. (Referencing Beyonce whenever I can on a daily basis!) I’ve also added a mini review on all of the makeup so you can get my in-depth feedback on everything.

The Products I Use To CreateA Flawless Base…

First of all, I’ll give you a quick heads up on the products used in the two routines below. Then we can get right into the nitty-gritty of the when’s, the why’s and the how’s…

Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation

(We all saw it coming, it was pretty obvious that this bad boy would be making an appearance.)

I’ll keep it short and sweet because you have heard it all before lol! This is my FAVE drugstore foundation if you didn’t know already.? This creates a stunning base while still keeping your makeup looking natural.

Revolution Makeup Bake & Finish Powder

A new product I have been trying out for a month or so. After falling in love with the Laura Mercier powder, I have been on the hunt for a drugstore alternative. I honestly think this is the one! For only five pounds, you really can’t complain. I use this to set my under eye concealer and any oily patches I will inevitably get throughout the day. I haven’t had any problems with it cracking on my skin or any flashback, bonus!

Revolution Makeup Fast Base Stick Foundation

I finally got my hands on the Revolution foundation stick. I don’t know about you guys but these concealers and foundations are ALWAYS sold out in my local Superdrug. So I decided to order online and guess my shade from which shades my fave Youtubers with similar skin tones use. Hahaha, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do! So if any of you huns need a hand, my shade is F5.

Revolution Makeup Conceal and Define Concealer

The award for the best drugstore concealer will ALWAYS go to Makeup Revolution. How can a concealer be this good for only £4? It is madness!! I will never ever stop buying this! Again, it is a tricky one to grab in the store because everyone loves it just as much as me. So for all my girls wanting to order online again, my shade is C4 which is a little lighter than my foundation shade to brighten up those under eyes.

NYX Professional Makeup High Definition Finish Setting Powder

Another newbie, another powder I was whisking off to compare to the Laura Mercier setting powder. (Our girl Laura will always be up there with the best but when you are broke because you spent all your money on clothes, you’ve gotta hit the drugstore!) As you can see this is a pressed powder, so it’s a little different to the Makeup Revolution one. But I wanted to add this one in because 1. its a fab product that I use regularly and 2. because I know a lot of people aren’t a fan of loose setting powder so this is a great alternative to the Makeup Revolution powder that I previously mentioned.

The Original Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge

A holy grail, forever and ever AMEN. Nothing can beat the original in my eyes. I know it’s pricey in comparison to Real Techniques and EcoTools which I also love. And I know it is not from the drugstore. But I find myself gravitating back to this one just like Megan gravitates to a new boy every week in Love Island! ? (Sorry I couldn’t help myself). The dewy, natural finish that this sponge creates is so effortless and beautiful. Creating a flawless base ready for our next makeup step. The durability of the sponge after repeatedly using it and washing it is another brilliant reason why it stands out from the crowd.

Iconic London Ultimate Face Brush Set

A little one I snook in again that isn’t from the drugstore. But technically, in my defence, I only said the products were drugstore hehe! If you guys are looking for a boujee (never used that word in my life so let’s just roll with it) makeup brush set, this is the one! These brushes are definitely a luxurious buy. Absolutely gorgeous pearl gold stiletto handles with fluffy cream bristles. Almost too pretty to use. They apply makeup like a dream and assist perfectly in creating a flawless base!

Creating a flawless base

Now we know all of the ingredients, I mean products we need…? I thought the easiest and quickest way to run through both methods would be a basic step by step for you guys to follow and look back on if needed.

Step by Step Guide to Creating A Flawless Base…

Method 1.

  • After applying your fave moisturiser and primer, grab a damp Beauty Blender. (For your makeup to look flawless and dewy, your sponge always needs to be damp and not dry!)
  • Apply a few pumps of the Rimmel London Match Perfection Foundation and blend into your skin using gentle dabbing motions.
  • After you have completed your whole face, apply the Makeup Revolution Concealer to your problems areas. Mine would be under eyes and any breakouts or blemishes.
  • Using the same Beauty Blender, work this into the skin until flawless.
  • Now it is time to set all of the concealed areas with the Makeup Revolution Setting Powder. Some people like to use the Beauty Blender for this step but I feel more comfortable with a makeup brush.
  • Once all the concealer is set in place, you are now ready to apply the rest of your makeup!

Method 2.

Instead of going through the same details as method 1, the only things I have changed for this method is the foundation and the setting powder. The way I apply is the same but just two different products. So the second foundation option is the Makeup Revolution foundation stick. The second powder option is the NYX pressed setting powder.

TBK Tip: If you usually have problems with your concealer under your eyes creasing then apply and set one eye first before moving onto the second.

Once all of your makeup is finished, I always complete the look by using the Makeup Revolution setting sprays. I use the Pro-Fix Oil Control Spray as I have oily skin but I have also been recommended the Illuminating Setting Spray.

There we have it guys! My complete routine on how to create a flawless base using just drugstore makeup. I hope this has helped you so much and you are filling your baskets with a bunch of new products, eeek! Finding drugstore bargains is genuinely one of my hobbies at the minute, so if you guys want any more recommendations, be sure to read my blog post all about The Best Makeup On A Budget. It is packed full of drugstore gems that you’d love!

Thanks so much for reading guys. Sorry, there has been a huge gap in between posts. Life has been crazy over the past few weeks. Let’s have a catch up in the comments!

Lots of Love…

Thanks for this – I’m always guilty of using a dry beauty blender! You don’t recommend using a setting spray also?

Hi Amanda, you’re very welcome! I know, it is a chore wetting it if you forget beforehand! I always set my makeup with setting spray, you probably read I recommended some from Makeup Revolution. Do you mean using a setting spray to wet your beauty blender? If so, I have seen some makeup artist do this but I think it is a waste a product as water works just the same.
