In all honesty, the zip is breaking on my makeup bag because it is crammed full of products. I often ask myself, do I really need all of this makeup? The response is always “YES!” There is one part of my makeup routine that in the past, I questioned whether it was really necessary, I wasn’t 100% sure it was making much difference. That step was makeup primer. I have heard so many people say ‘primer doesn’t really do anything for my makeup/skin’ which I would have agreed with a few years ago. But now, I think it is all about finding the right primer for you and your skin. So let’s talk about the best primer for combination skin.
The Best Makeup Primer For Combination Skin
The reasons for choosing combination skin – 1. I would say most people are a mix of more than one skin type and 2. your girl right here is a combination! This basically means, sometimes you might be oily, dry, sensitive, dehydrated, etc. For example, my t-zone loves being a shiny mess. Whereas my cheeks are pretty normal, sometimes sensitive but mostly well behaved. Before I let you know what I think is the best primer for combination skin *SPOILER I have actually written about three of my best primers for combination skin* I wanted to really dig deep into what primers are actually for and how they work. I can understand why people would think it is a pointless step when their primer isn’t improving anything at all. Especially when spending a few pennies!
What is makeup primer?
Makeup primers are a base before you apply your makeup. They are designed to prep your skin ready for makeup, creating a smoother, flawless surface and help to keep your makeup on for longer. Makeup primers can also help smooth any fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores. Formulas are available in cream, gel, and powder. In my journey of finding the best primer from combination skin, I have always used creams!
Which type of primer best suits me?
The most important part of choosing your primer is determining what skin type you are. Different skin types have different needs. For example, someone with super oily, breakout prone skin, who experiences shine appearing on their face as the day goes on. These people would benefit from a mattifying primer. This will even out the skin tone and matte any areas where there is excess oil throughout the day. However, someone who is dry and dehydrated would need a hydrating primer, which will give them the extra moisture they need. Nourishing the skin, gaining more hydration which in turn will create a flawless base for the makeup application.
What is the best primer for combination skin?
I’m greedy, I can’t just have one so I had to have three haha! Below I have listed my favourite three primers which I think will definitely help you find the best primer for combination skin. They are also varied in price so there is something there for everyone’s budget.
BEST MAKEUP PRIMERS FOR COMBINATION SKIN UK
Too Faced Hangover X Primer – £27.00
I would call this my holy grail makeup primer, I have used it for years and it is fab for everyone! With super-hydrating ingredients like coconut water, it is fantastic for keeping your skin hydrated which is exactly what you want before makeup application. The Too Faced primer glides on beautifully and creates a soft and even skin tone for your foundation to apply perfectly on top of. I would recommend this as a good primer for combination skin because it hydrates any dry areas you may have but the lightweight formula doesn’t feel thick or greasy on your skin.
“The lightweight formula is infused with hydrating coconut water, probiotics, and skin revivers to rebalance moisture levels and boost skin’s radiance beautifully. Used alone or to create a seamless canvas and lock down makeup.“
BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP PRIMER
Sleek MakeUP Mattifying Primer – £7.99
The mattifying queen right here! This is the best drugstore makeup primer. The Sleek primer is perfect for when your combination skin is playing up. Like I said previously, I get that oily shine on my t-zone throughout the day. Especially in the summer months. You will find me using this on holiday, in the summer and also on those days when my skin is just being a pain in general. Honestly, my makeup doesn’t budge after using this. Also, remember you can always mix and match your primers.
If you guys like experimenting like me, I would also try applying different primers to different areas of concern. For example, apply the mattifying primer onto your oily t-zone and then finish off with a hydrating primer on dry cheeks!
“This mattifying primer helps reduce oil for flawless looking, matte skin. Soft-focus powders provide a velvety finish and help blur the appearance of fine lines. Can be worn alone or under foundation.“

Without a doubt, the best primer for combination skin. Don’t forget to always moisturise as you do normally before priming, this isn’t replacing your regular skin care step, it is just enhancing!
